As an unpaid carer, you may be eligible for grants, breaks and discounts designed to support your wellbeing, ease financial pressures, and provide you with much-needed time for yourself. These opportunities are usually funded by external organisations. While you can often apply directly, some may require Carers Leeds to apply on your behalf.
Some grants and carer break schemes are open to all unpaid carers, while others have specific eligibility criteria depending on factors such as your finances or the type of care you provide. It’s always best to check the requirements of each provider before applying, as you may need to provide details about your personal circumstances.
Grants can help cover a wide range of expenses, including (but not limited to):
- Essential household appliances – such as washing machines, freezers, or heaters
- Holidays and short breaks – such as travel and accommodation costs
- Digital equipment – such as tablets or laptops to help you stay connected
- Driving lessons – to support independence and mobility
- Wellbeing activities – such as gym memberships, therapy sessions, or massages
Proving your carer status
Most grants and breaks require proof that you are an unpaid carer. Typically, a letter from a professional (such as a hospital referral or confirmation of carer-related benefits like Carer’s Allowance) will be sufficient. Some providers may also request a supporting statement from a professional who has worked with you or the person you care for.
Providing receipts
Some grants require you to submit receipts after receiving funds to confirm that the money has been used for its intended purpose. Keeping both digital and physical copies of your receipts can help avoid any issues later on.
Carefree

To apply, you sign up on the Carefree website and provide details about yourself and the person you care for. You will need to submit proof of your caring status, either by uploading a document or nominating a professional referee.
Once approved, you’ll gain access to Carefree’s booking portal, where you can browse and request a hotel stay. Each break costs a small admin fee and includes up to two nights’ accommodation (often with breakfast included)
